Day Trip
We've been spending the past few days getting caught up on things. Yesterday the weather was good and we decided to take a day trip to Red Wing. We were thinking about bringing our bikes but decided not to because of the wind.
It was a nice trip down although we did get into a bit of discussion over the radio. We have Sirius radio in the car and C likes to listen to MSNBC. I on the other hand would prefer music of no radio at all. There is a lot of talk about the upcoming election and frankly I get anxious when I listen to too much of it. Since we had agreed to have a relaxing day C turned the radio off.
Since we got a late start, we had lunch first. I got a jalapeno dip burger with tater tots. C got a California burger. The restaurant was really short staffed. It took a while to get our food. It was warm but not hot. They did have tater tots which was something of a miracle. They are listed on the menu but when I order them I get told they are out of them. We ate, paid our bill and left.
We went to the park nearest the restaurant first. The park is located right on the Mississippi River. We've been told that the sharpest turn the river takes is right near the park. We saw a barge hard at work pushing a load of dirt toward the shore. The leaves are off most of the trees now. I don't mind that. To me all trees are beautiful and without the leaves you can see nests for birds and squirrels.
Our next stop was Levee Park downtown next to the old rail depot. Amtrak does stop there, but there are no station attendants. There is a store in the depot that sells items made by local artists. There is also a small gallery that displays various types of art during the year. While we walked we saw a train go though.
I wanted to hike on He Mni Can (Barn Bluff ) that overlooks the city. C was reluctant to do that as the last time was very scary for him. I reminded him that we took the difficult train in error and that there was an easier trail we could take. He still wasn't sure. We compromised and went to Memorial Park instead. It is another bluff, not as high as He Mni Can. You can drive to the top of Memorial Park and walk on the trails around the bluff. There is also a disc golf course.
Once we were done with our walk we headed to Stockholm. C had not had any pie from there all summer. We went there once a couple months ago and it was closed. We drove along the scenic area down the rolling hills. When we got to Stockholm, the café was closed, but you could still get pie. C got a piece of lingonberry lemon pie. I had bumble berry. I would have like to have had a cup of tea with my pie, they only had coffee. I drank the water we had brought with us.
After we ate, we walked around Stockholm which didn't take very long. It's not big. We got in the car and headed for home refreshed and ready to tackle the rest of the week.
