It's Cold Outside

 


        It's cold outside, the thermometer on our furnace thermostat says it's -13 degrees. It's been cold like this for the past several days. You'd never know it by looking outside. The sun is shining and I think the wind is pretty minimal. Most people don't like weather like this. I don't mind it at all.

        I went to college in North Dakota. It was a long time ago, but I remember a lot of below zero days there. I also remember it being windy most of the time. I learned to wear warm clothes especially a scarf if I had to be outside. I also learned  to shortcut through buildings as much as possible to get to my classes. As long as I was dressed properly, I knew I'd be all right. As long as I had what I needed I didn't need to be scared of weather like this.

        There is another reason why I'm not bothered cold weather. It's a godsend for introverts like me. Most people don't want to go out during weather like this so it's possible for a introvert to stay home and not appear anti social. This gives us a chance to recharge our mental batteries and be ready to tackle the world when the weather is better.

        I've been rediscovering how much I like candles. I have a lot of them that I bought over the years. A few days ago I lit a small candle in a metal container that I received as a Christmas present. I did it early in the morning when it was dark in the house. The little flame looked so hopeful as its tiny light cut through the darkness around it. It was a rose scented candle so beside the tiny globe of light it produced, it perfumed the living room. Usually I'm busy thinking of all the things I have get done. When it's cold out, I find myself slowing down and being in the moment. 

        Another things I like about weather like this is hot chocolate. For some reason it tastes better when it is cold out. Maybe it has something to do with the base being warm milk. It doesn't just taste good. It feels good too. The same goes for hot soup and chili.

        To me there isn't much of a downside to these really cold days. I'm prepared with all I need, warm clothes if I have to go out and lots of comfort food, cozy clothes, a good book and a snuggly cat. See you when it warms up.

My Day

              This past week was the last part of a stretch of six working days in a row. The reason why I can do  a stretch like that is because Sunday is the first day of the work week. That means a when I work from Thursday to Tuesday it's only three days in a row each week. Before my boss went home for the day on Tuesday, I asked her to give me my second shingles shot. I knew I had the next two days off in case I reacted badly to it which I did. (This is normal for me which I'm perversely grateful for. At least this means I have a working immune system.) Wednesday was spent feeling sick except for a few hours in the afternoon when I fortified myself with ibuprofen and a Coke Zero so C could take me out to lunch at a nearby Indian restaurant. Valentine's Dates

      C and I had a Valentine's date day today. I have a 12 hour shift on the actual holiday, so celebrating  before or after work is out of the question. Over lunch I was trying to think of something to write about this week. C suggested writing about Valentine's day dates.     There were three that were very memorable for vastly different reasons. The first one was before I got married. It was the day that my boyfriend at the time served me a heart shaped jello for dessert. It had the potential to be a romantic gesture, but it was an anatomically correct heart made with a little evaporated milk and covered in cherry sauce to make it look real. I think I also received a blender as a present that year. The next two were when I was dating and engaged to C. Our first Valentine's Day dinner was at Culver's. Second Chances

           In January 2009, Jeffrey R. Holland, member of the Quorum of the Twelve of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and for president of Brigham Young University returned to that campus to speak at a devotional. The title of the speech he gave is 'Remember Lot's Wife'. As it was the beginning of a new year, Elder Holland spoke on faith and the future.           One of the things he talked about was wanting to live in the past. The "good old days" when life was better and everything was easier. Having a "I wish I were eighteen again" attitude.  Nothing in the future could be as good as the past.
