New Shoes

Last week C and I did some much needed shopping. The tennis shoes that C wear for pickleball were getting worn out and I needed to replace some clothes that were getting worn out.

The first place we went was the shoe store. While C was talking to the salesman about the right shoes for pickle ball, I looked around. The first thing I looked at was tennis shoes. I was thinking about buying a pair to wear at work. Most of my coworkers wear tennis shoes to work. The shoes that I have are pretty comfortable but I wondered if a good pair of tennis shoes would be more comfortable especially on days when I work long shifts. An employee approached me while I was looking. I hadn't planned on trying anything on, but figured it couldn't hurt.

A bit of background might be in order here. When I was younger, I wore tennis shoes to work. I had a white pair specially designated for this purpose. I could be on my feet for as much as 12 hours or more during some shifts. Since most dress shoes for women were narrow and uncomfortable for my wide feet, tennis shoes were my only choice.

Several years later, I changed jobs. While I wasn't specifically told not to wear tennis shoes, the pharmacy manager made it clear he considered it unprofessional dress. I was able to find dress shoes made for wider feet and continued to wear them ever since.

I told the salesperson about my feet and the tendency to roll out when I walk. Turns out they have just the shoe for that. After measuring my foot, he brought out the shoes he thought would work best.

I tried them on and they felt good. I walked around a little bit. They felt really nice. My feet didn't feel crunched and I had nice side support. The shoes looked huge on my feet. To me it looked like clown shoes. I'm willing to wear silly looking shoes as long as they are comfortable. There were four colours to chose from, I chose white thinking that it would look more professional.

Before we went to pay for the shoes, I changed my mind. White can be hard to keep clean. I didn't really want black shoes. The other two choices were green or pink. Another tech had pink shoes and I didn't want to look like I was trying to match her. I got the green ones.

I worked this last weekend and wore the shoes to work because they'd need to be broken in. partway through the shift my feet started to hurt. I was worried that maybe this wouldn't work out. Then I remembered that this was part of the breaking in process. They'd need to stretch some. It would be fine. When I wore them the next shift, it was better.

I'm happy that I bought them and look forward to wearing them for the long shifts ahead.
