Barnaby's New "Toy"

 


        Now that we are back home and have re-established our routine with the cats, Barnaby has discovered a new "toy". The word is in quotation marks because it isn't really something to play with. However, one thing I have discovered in my many years of living with cats is that everything is one of two categories: food or toys.

        I discovered this new interest a day or two after we got home. I was in the bathroom washing my hands when Barnaby jumped on the counter. He watched the water coming out of the faucet with great interest. I turned the water down to a thin trickle to see what he would do. He continued to watch it for a little bit and then started to bat at the stream with his paw. I let him do this for a few minutes and then turned the faucet off.

        I started turning on the water for him anytime I was in the bathroom. Pretty soon it became obvious that this was a mistake. Now he expects the water to be turned on and crawls into the sink if it isn't. He's also gone from batting the water streams to somehow sticking his head under the stream while also batting at it. It's hard to explain what he does, you almost have to see it.

        One good  thing about his faucet interest is that he no longer feels the need to kick things off the bathroom counter. It got so bad we had to ban him from the bathroom so he wouldn't break anything.

        I've started thinking about getting out a small ornamental fountain that I used several years ago. I packed it up when we moved here and never got it back out. It's pretty and I liked the sound of the water as it moved on the rocks in the fountain. Maybe Barnaby would enjoy it too.

        Hopefully he won't develop an interest in the kitchen faucet.....

Paczki

      After we checked out of the St James last week, we went for a stroll around town. I wanted to stop at the bakery. Red Wing has a really good one and worth a visit if you are in that part of town. I wanted to get of load of their cranberry walnut bread and maybe some kind of pastry.      As we walked toward the door, there was a large sing advertising paczki (punch-key or poonch -key). According to the internet and the sign on the bakery window, they are a fried, filled pastry of Polish origin. It was a way of using up eggs, milk, butter and sugar before the Lenten fast. They are larger than a typical Bismarck donut and made with richer dough. They are filled with fruit filling, cream, custard or chocolate. My Day

              This past week was the last part of a stretch of six working days in a row. The reason why I can do  a stretch like that is because Sunday is the first day of the work week. That means a when I work from Thursday to Tuesday it's only three days in a row each week. Before my boss went home for the day on Tuesday, I asked her to give me my second shingles shot. I knew I had the next two days off in case I reacted badly to it which I did. (This is normal for me which I'm perversely grateful for. At least this means I have a working immune system.) Wednesday was spent feeling sick except for a few hours in the afternoon when I fortified myself with ibuprofen and a Coke Zero so C could take me out to lunch at a nearby Indian restaurant. The New Year

      My alarm went off at 5 AM as it always does. After going to bed at close to 1AM, my first thought was to turn it off and go back to sleep. I couldn't do it. The cats needed to be fed and I didn't want to interrupt my usual morning routine.     I gave each cat half a can of wet food which is their treat twice a week and on holidays. While they ate I took down all our old calendars. We usually have three. Two of them are traditional hanging calendars in the kitchen and in our computer room. The other is a page a day calendar in the kitchen. I buy different page a day calendars every year. This year's calendar is inspiring quotes from women.     I gathered the old calendars up and put them in the recycling bin.
