Cinnamon Roll
Last year I was visiting my friend, Dana. During the visit she offered me a cinnamon roll to try. She was pleased with how the batch had turned out and told me they tasted like the ones from Cinnabon. It was a very good roll and I told her so. I also told her I'd never had a roll from Cinnabon. She told me I'd have to try them sometime.
For those of you who may be reading this and are either not from the United States or have never been in a shopping mall, Cinnabon is a small chain bakery that makes cinnamon rolls. Many times you know you are walking near one by the smell of cinnamon and baking dough. They have cinnamon rolls topped with various things, small bite sized rolls and boxes of rolls to take home.
Most of the time when I've been in a mall, it's closer to lunch time. Since I believe cinnamon rolls are either breakfast or teatime treats I've never sampled one. I must admit, I do like the smell.
C and I were walking in the big mall yesterday. On the first floor is a Cinnabon that we always walk past. Every time we pass it I think of Dana telling me to try one. Usually we walk after breakfast or have lunch plans after the walk so we've never tried it. This time was no different.
C and I walked around a bit and then C said, "When we get done with our walk, let's go to Cinnabon." I was surprised. I may have mentioned what Dana said to C once or twice, but not recently. After we finished our walk we went down the escalator and walked to Cinnabon.
Cinnabon is located on a corner. Most of the space in the bakery is taken up by ovens and counter space to prepare and bake the rolls. In front of the check out counter is a small space for people to stand while ordering or waiting for an order and two small tables with two chairs each and a garbage can. The scent of baked goods was in the air. The counters were piled with boxes of rolls for people to take home. There was an Easter promotion where the rolls could be frosted with pastel coloured icing. It may taste good, but it didn't look good. C ordered two rolls and our drinks. I sat down at one of the two small tables.
C brought our rolls to the table with our drinks. They were in boxes with a plastic knife and fork. I opened the box. The roll was large and warm. The icing had completely melted and was mixing with the cinnamon. I took a bite. It was fresh and very good. Normally I eat a cinnamon roll with my hands peeling off the portions of roll to eat. With the melted icing and gooey cinnamon, I would have to use a knife and fork. The cinnamon was not dry, like many rolls I've had. It seemed almost like a thick syrup that clung to the bread. I was expecting it to be really sweet but it wasn't. It was the perfect amount of sweetness. I savored every bite. Once I finished my roll I used my fork to scrape some of the cinnamon off the bottom on the box. It was good. I'm glad I tired it.
