Random Assorted Stuff
I've been given more hours at work which has its good and bad sides. The good side is that I get to spend more time at work which is good since I like my job and my coworkers. The bad side is that there is less time to get things done around the house and less time to think of column ideas.
I was thinking of writing about Mariann Edgar Budde, and Episcopal bishop in Washington DC. I've listened to several of her sermons over the years. I even bought one of her books. Much has been said about her sermon a few weeks back at a service for unity. A lot of the comments have been focused on the remarks she addressed to the President near the end of the sermon. I have listened to the entire sermon a couple of times. I wish those quick to criticize would listen to the entire sermon before rendering judgement. That sermon could be delivered to any leader at the beginning of her/ his term. An elected official should be mindful of all those she/ he represents, not just their supporters.
C and I have been relearning how to play cribbage. I wanted us to have something to do besides watching movies and looking at our phones. It's been a bit of a struggle for me since math is my worst subject. I've been known to count on my fingers more than once.
This has branched out into an interest in acquiring other games. C mentioned that he would like to learn how to play backgammon and chess. We've been looking for an inexpensive backgammon board. We don't want to spend a lot of money on a set just in case we decide we don't like the game. Today we went walking in the mall and walked past a game store. They had backgammon boards, but what interested me more was a chess set. Tt was called Chess without Stress. It's a chess board with cards. You draw a card and that is the piece you move. The goal is to eventually get familiar with the game to the point of not using the cards. It was a good price, so I bought it. I'm looking forward to using it tomorrow after church.
There is a small café in the mall that serves crepes. C wanted to go there to eat breakfast. I had already eaten but was interested in a drink on the menu. It was called Mayan hot chocolate. I was excited to try it. One of my favourite movies is 'Chocolat'. In that movie they make a chocolate drink that has a little chili pepper that was supposed to have been drunk by Mayans. I imagined this hot, dark, slightly sweet concoction with a bit of spice.
We placed our order and found a table. The server brought a large plate with C's order, a small cup and a large cup. The small cup was the cinnamon roobis tea that C wanted. The large cup was for me. The was powder on top of the cup and it smelled of cinnamon. I took a sip. It was all right, but not what I expected. What I was served was a large hot chocolate that was more like warm sweet milk with a little chocolate flavoring. I was disappointed.
Now my motivation is to find a recipe. Maybe there is a way I could make this at home. Obviously I couldn't make it the way it was in the movie. It'll be fun to make it anyway....
