Day 1 in DC

Today is our first whole day in Door County. Thankfully it was not raining this morning and the sun was peeking out from behind the clouds. It was a good day to go the the Apple Festival. We had never been to the Apple Festival before. In fact we didn't even know there was one. After a wonderful breakfast and conversation with Kirstie and Chad who are the new innkeepers,we headed out. The first thing we noticed was that it was a bit nippy and a breeze was blowing.
We got the the place where the festival was taking place. We were early as things were still being set up. There was going to be pumpkin painting and apple launching. The apple launching looked interesting. A large slingshot made of bungee cords was rigged together and fastened to the ground. There was a small roof over the contraption. Tied to the bungee cords was a small pouch where the apple being launched was placed. There were three large barrels set up a good distance away. If your apple landed in the barrel, a prize would be won.
We walked inside the farm store near the festival site. They had samples of a few things that we tried. There were large tables of fruit pies and cider doughnuts, a specialty in the area. There were apple samples and apple cider samples. There were also a lot of people. The checkout lanes were all filled. Since we were going to be there for the week we decided not to buy anything.
Since the weather was colder, the festival was going to be held inside a nearby storage building. Bales of hay were set around a stage where a bluegrass gospel band was going to perform. A food truck had pulled up next to the building and was getting ready to serve. There was a table where people could build their own pumpkin pie in a cup or caramel apple. A small crowd was starting to gather.
C and I were seated at a small table between the food wagon and the side of the stage. The food wagon was serving chili and various items made with chili like chili dogs, nachos and burritos. I stayed at the table while C placed our order. He was going to have a chili dog and I wanted a burrito.
I knew I was in Wisconsin the minute I bit into the burrito. It had noodles in it. In this state it is common to find some sort of noodle in chili. I know that Cincinnati style chili is chili served over spaghetti with onions and cheese on top. This is different, The chili is served with noodles or some sort of pasta in the chili itself. It was good chili and it had a bit of a bite which I like. The interesting thing was that C liked it. He's not a fan of spicy food.
After we finished we listening to the band for a bit. They were good, but C pointed out after awhile all bluegrass songs tend to sound the same. They played several Baptist standards which pleased C. I went to get a caramel apple.  The apple was cut up and caramel sauce was poured over it. There were nuts and a few other toppings that could be added. I added nuts and some sprinkles to mine. The challenge with a caramel sauce in colder temps is that it gets hard very quickly making the apple hard to eat as the sauce doesn't stick. C and I managed as we usually do. Only one apple piece landed on the floor.
There wasn't much else going on at the festival so c and I left to explore. We hit the new Piggly Wiggly and bought some herb tea.  We noted with sadness that Shopko had closed. We liked that store. It was a good place to buy cheap washcloth yarn.
We went to a few stores that we like to check them out. We'll return later in the week to make any purchases we want.
We're back in our room in the bed and breakfast. Tonight we are eating a late dinner with Kirstie and Chad at a restaurant we've never been to before. This is the first time we've ever dined with the innkeepers. I'm looking forward to making their acquaintance.
