Comfortable Surroundings

The new air conditioner and furnace were installed yesterday. Scamp and Colby are quite pleased by it and so are C and I. Although we did manage the last few weeks without it, central air is quite nice.
Whenever someone comes to the house to install or fix something I like to watch them. This goes back to when I was a kid. My Dad is an engineer and I would often go with him when things were broken and needed repair. I would watch him take apart the broken machine carefully and then put it back together again and it would work. I learned that the way to find out how things work is by taking them apart and then putting them back together.
Our new system is pretty complicated. Two men were here for 12 hours and one of them has to come back today as he needed to make a part for our furnace so it would connect to the duct work. The furnace does not use a chimney, instead it exhausts to the side of the house. This meant he needed to find a place away from windows and other meters when the exhaust vent could go. Then he had to carefully piece together piping across the laundry room ceiling to get to the right spot. It's not as easy as it sounds. One bad connection and carbon monoxide would fill the basement. There was wiring to hook up and a new compressor and heat pump to install.
I'm already happy with the new system. There is a small probe outside hooked to our thermostat that show us the outside temp. The thermostat controls all the parts of the system and is actually pretty easy to understand and I haven't even had time to look at the manual yet. Our house was nice and cool last night and for the first time in about a week we both got a full night of sleep. (Usually one of us wakes up a time or two) The air inside is drier and Scamp and Colby are also more comfortable once the installers left.
The new system is more energy efficient too. We've been replacing appliances as we've needed to with more energy efficient models. My hope is that we will save a little money and be a bit better stewards of what we are given. I'm curious to see how the bills from this year will compare to last year.
Another added benefit is that since we were forced to stay home while the installation was going C cleaned out the spare room. We keep talking about doing it, but neither of us had time. C jumped in and got right to work. You can see the floor in there now. The books and papers are off the floor. He has a box of things for me to sort. The guitars are stacked neatly against the wall and once we empty the file cabinet, it can be moved so we can get another bookshelf. (We have a lot of books) The room looks so much better now and the space is usable again. C can use it for his office and I can go in there without feeling claustrophobic. So that also makes the house more comfortable. He also cleared the area around the computer. I found four recipes that I printed off and never made. (They still look really good.)
So, we are pretty happy with this. To celebrate, we are going out for a bike ride..... (We'll have a cool house to come back to.)
