Ice Cream

When some people get to be "a certain age", they tend to reminisce. Things were better then including the food.  While that may be true about some foods, there is one that has improved over time. It is ice cream.

When I was young, we always had ice cream in the house. Most evenings after supper, my dad would eat a scoop of vanilla ice cream with nutmeg sprinkled on it. Sometimes we would buy it in plastic buckets, most of the times it was in rectangular cartons that we kept in the basement freezer. I remember that ice cream came in very basic flavours vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. If you felt fancy you could get Butter Brickle, Moose Tracks or Mint Chip.

I'm not sure if ice cream making technology has improved in the last 40 years, but for some reason ice cream tastes better to me now than it did then.

There could be a couple reasons for this. One of them is that some of the companies that make ice cream may not have existed 40 years ago or maybe not where I lived. I sure don't remember Ben and Jerry's or Cedar Crest when I was a kid. A quick Google search has revealed that these companies were in operation when I was younger but were mostly regional at that time.

I think a big reason is the number of flavours that are available. I was pondering on this while enjoying a cup of Scotcheroo ice cream after our post bike ride lunch. There are so many to choose from now. I don't remember Superman, Lemon Cheesecake or Coconut Explosion as options for ice cream flavours. The only sherbet flavours I remember are orange, lemon, lime and raspberry. Now there is also watermelon and mango. (The watermelon is ok, not as good as the real fruit.)

I've been known to choose an ice cream flavour based on the name. One place we went to has a flavour called Lake Effect Pothole. It's chocolate ice cream with a lot of good stuff in it and is delicious. I haven't seen it since.

C and I get different flavours when we get ice cream. Then we can taste what the other person has. (One of the benefits of marriage.)  Lately C has picked some really good flavours. A few times I wished I'd picked his choice, especially when he got Lemon Cheesecake.

I'm looking forward to seeing what other flavours we'll discover this summer.
