My Day

This past week was the last part of a stretch of six working days in a row. The reason why I can do  a stretch like that is because Sunday is the first day of the work week. That means a when I work from Thursday to Tuesday it's only three days in a row each week. Before my boss went home for the day on Tuesday, I asked her to give me my second shingles shot. I knew I had the next two days off in case I reacted badly to it which I did. (This is normal for me which I'm perversely grateful for. At least this means I have a working immune system.) Wednesday was spent feeling sick except for a few hours in the afternoon when I fortified myself with ibuprofen and a Coke Zero so C could take me out to lunch at a nearby Indian restaurant. It was delicious.

Thursday I felt better and went to visit my parents as usual. Yesterday I was back at work for one more day. I have the weekend off and I was looking forward to doing things and feeling better.

Today didn't start out great. I woke up with a splitting headache in the middle of a thunderstorm. I really didn't want to get up and go to the kitchen for the ibuprofen at 1:30 in the morning so I waited out the headache and managed to get back to sleep.

When the alarm went off, I got up somewhat less rested than I would have liked. I went to the kitchen and got my ibuprofen. I fed the cats and checked their water. Then I settled on the couch for scripture study time. Normally I spend some time pondering what I've read but I had a telephone date today. My friend Mickey and I planned a phone call for 6:30 AM. We are both early risers so that is the best time to catch up. We hadn't had one of our marathon conversations in a long time so we were due.

I called her promptly at 6:30 as planned and we had a long talk. Much of it was catching up on things. She had recently moved from the western South Dakota near the Black Hills to the other side of the state. Her mother had moved to be closer to other members of the family and Mickey moved too. In retrospect I think she wishes she hadn't done it. She was told the cost of living was less on the east side of the state but she has not found that to be true. The place she works pays her a bit less than she was making before while costs have not gone down. She's not able to move back so as is usual for her she'll make the best of it. I do hope she finds some friends though.

We talked about cats. She has one cat named Bubba. He is long haired, black and white and is the most photogenic cat I've ever seen. We talked about plants and I asked her advice about some houseplants I want to get. Mickey has always been good with plants and knows which ones are not safe around cats.

We talked about our families. Mickey and I have been friends all our lives so she knows my parents and I know hers. She talked about her siblings. Neither one of us is close to our siblings. We talked about crafts and just stuff.

I made some tea and had something to eat while we talked. Sometimes having bionic ears is helpful. I don't have to worry about holding the phone. C left to work out and when he came back, Mickey and I were still talking. We talked for two and a half hours. That's pretty normal for us.

C ate breakfast while I got myself ready for the day. Since I had missed my workout, we went to the Big Mall to walk. We like walking at the Big Mall. the people watching is excellent and if we get there early it's not too crowded. We found a good parking spot and enjoyed our walk. I stopped at a bookstore to buy a book someone at Toastmasters recommended.

We went from the Big Mall to Costco. Costco is another place we like to go. We planned to grill hamburgers tomorrow and would make some extra for me to take when I visit my parents. We got more tofu and some fruit. We also enjoyed a bite at the food court.

I wanted a cookie from a nearby grocery store and I picked up some rolls for Sunday breakfast. Then we went home.

I realized to my chagrin that I had forgotten to bake the tofu I had marinating in the fridge overnight. My plan was to bake it while on the phone with Mickey and I forgot. I hoped it would still be all right. I also had some other domestic chores that I wanted to complete.

I didn't accomplish everything on my to do list, but the most important things are done. The cats' drinking fountain is clean, the tofu is cooked and ready for meal prep and my work pants are drying on the clothes rack. C and I had a good time and I got to catch up with a longtime friend. It is a good day.
