C's Milestone

My beloved C is celebrating a birthday this week. He won't be happy I mentioned this, but it is one of those milestone birthdays. You know what I mean. Turning 16, 20,21,25,30, 40 etc. seem to have more meaning then say, turning 38. C will be celebrating his 60th birthday this year.
I plan to spoil the heck out of him. We are going to see a play one night and the other night I'm taking him out for his favourite meal, steak.
In his honour this column will highlight some of the things that happened in January. I will also list a few other people who turn 60 this year.
In January 1506 the first group of Swiss Guards came to the Vatican. The Swiss Guards are the men responsible for guarding the Pope. They wear colourful ceremonial uniforms and can be seen standing guard around the Vatican.
King Edward VII took the throne of England following the death of his mother, Queen Victoria in January 1901. He was the great grandfather of the current Queen.
The first commercial television station, KTLA, started broadcasting in 1947. Hopefully programming was much better then.
The Apollo 5 lifted off in January 1968 carrying the first lunar module into space. That paved the way for the Apollo 11 mission which landed on the moon nearly a year and a half later.
The following are some notable events from 1951.
The 22nd amendment to the Constitution that limits Presidents to two terms only was ratified in February.
The comic strip Dennis the Menace first appeared in March. The musical "The King and I" opened on Broadway with a three year run.
The book, 'The Catcher in the Rye' by J.D.Salinger was published in August.
'I Love Lucy' was first broadcast in October. CBS, the network it premiered on, started using the Eye logo. It is still used today.
Direct dial coast to coast telephone service started in November 1951.
The movie, 'The African Queen' premiered in Hollywood on December 23,1951.
There are many people turning 60 this year. I was surprised by some of the names. Here are a few of them.
Rush Limbaugh,Kirstie Alley and Phil Collins will all be turning 60 in January. Singer Melissa Manchester, actress Jane Seymour and Gordon Brown, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, will have to wait until February to celebrate the big six oh.
Joining the list will be Charo (anyone remember who she is?) designer Tommy Hilfiger (60 years old and still called Tommy?), former baseball player Bert Blyleven (did you know that he was born in the Netherlands?),Steven Seagal and Tony Danza.
Former Minneapolis mayor Sharon Sayles Belton turns 60 in May as does Minnesota Senator Al Franken. They are joined by astronaut Sally Ride and Russian chess player Anatoly Karpov.
Several actors turn 60 this year Richard Thomas (John-Boy),Anjelica Huston, Cheryl Ladd,Robin Williams, Lynda Carter (Wonder Woman),Mark Harmon and Mark Hamill (aka Luke Skywalker of Star Wars).
Since C is a musician I will end this with a list of musicians that turn 60 this year. John Deacon, bass player of Queen, turns 60 in August along with Wayne Osmond. David Coverdale, lead singer of the group Whitesnsake, bass player Stanley Clarke,Sting,John Mellencamp and Nils Lofgren are all going string and headed towards 60. Rock on guys!
This ends my 60th birthday tribute. Have fun whatever age you are.
Happy Birthday C with love from your three biggest fans Sophie, Colby and Scamp.
