Fall Festival

The Sister Bay Fall Festival is this weekend. This is one of the last big events in Door County before some of the seasonal businesses close for the winter. It starts on Friday night and goes through Sunday.
C and I usually miss the Fall Festival. We arrive in Door County on Saturday and spend the weekend doing other things or the Festival is the weekend before we arrive. This year we arrived on Friday. We stopped by the Festival after getting settled in to get the lay of the land and to look at the craft booths. They were starting to close up for the night, so we decided to come back on Saturday.
Saturday morning we had breakfast and got caught up with the innkeeper who we haven't seen since last year. Then we set out.
We decided to go into Fish Creek first to walk around. There was a parade which meant that that it would be very crowded and hard to get into town. We spent a few pleasant hours exploring the town and then headed north to Sister Bay.
We like going to street festivals. There are all kinds of food, entertainment, crafts and people. C and I enjoy people watching and there are few places better to do so than a street festival. By the time we got there it was 65 degrees outside and sunny. This is perfect weather, warm enough for people to be out and not too hot.
I enjoy looking at what people are wearing. I saw a lot of young women wearing tight jeans tucked into all kinds of boots. I had to chuckle at this. I didn't think that look was back in style. There were lots of people in jeans and tennis shoes too. I was wearing my Aaron Rodgers jersey with jeans and tennis shoes so I fit right in. As we were walking in one of the parks I found a set of abandoned beads. I think the beads are thrown from floats at the parade. I picked them up and put them on. Most likely they were left because they were a shade of purple, which is one of the colours of a certain football team located in Minnesota that most people in the area don't like.
We walked through the craft area first. I had just bought a new jacket and was on the lookout for a good hat and mittens to wear with it. I'm also looking for anything that might make a good Christmas present. We stopped at the booth of Doreen Knits. There was a red hat there that had caught my eye. I tried it on,but it didn't fit. I tried on a few others and finally found a gray hat with a beautiful butterfly pin on it. It was a perfect fit. On the way of of the craft area we had a nice chat with Santa who was watching the shoppers. He had was nursing a broken arm he claimed happened when he went snowboarding with the elves. "Elves are young and flexible, Santa is old and frail,"he said. So that is what he does in the off season. We also found a nice magnet for the fridge.
Then we walked towards the docks. On the way we passed the Humane Society booths. Two guts were playing some taped music and trying to get the donation jar filled. They saw me coming and yelled out, "Aaron Rodgers is an animal lover!". Obviously I would not be able to pass them without putting money in the jar. I slipped some cash into the jar and we continued on our way.
The was an empty bench on the dock and we say there and watched two seagulls float on the water. We could hear the band playing and the crowd noise from the street.
After awhile C was getting hungry and we headed back towards the festival. We saw a booth selling roasted corn and that is one of his favourite foods. He bought a large ear covered in butter. I had a taste. It was very good.
While he ate the corn, we watched people walk by. A lot of them were drinking beer from all kinds of containers. There were plastic cups, plastic mugs, football shaped mugs and yards. A yard is a tube around a food long with a bulb shaped closed end. The yard is carried by a Velcro strap around the neck.
There was a mechanical bull set up next to the bowling alley. A crowd had gathered around to watch. I was surprised at the number of people who tried it and more surprised that they seemed to be mostly sober. It was late in the afternoon and most of the people we saw were drinking beer. There were also several children. The best one was a young girl about 11 years old. She could have stayed on longer, but she got tired. It's pretty hard.
It was getting towards dinner time so we headed towards the food booths. Charlie wanted a brat or two. I had some pizza fresh out of the oven from an Italian bistro on the main street. The festival was closing for the day. Some of the food vendors were closing and the blocks were taken away so that cars could use the road again. Sheriff's deputies walked up the street asking peole to move onto the sidewalks so that the cars could go through. We finished our food and started to walk up the hill to the car. It was a good day.
